Just Because Things Break Doesn't Mean They're Broken Exhibition

'Just because things break, doesn't mean they're broken' is an exhibition and free art give away which combines the disturbingly beautiful work of Jakob Belbin and Karol Michalec.

For Jakob Belbin art is a reaction to life, made up of countless experiences and images, and it’s our job as humans to piece them together to try to make sense of all that has been thrown at us. The exhibition takes on this concept and translates it into fragmented and sometimes three dimensional works, encapsulating experiences, inspirations, observations and reactions to the modern world. 'Just because things break...' highlights our tendencies to dismiss ideas and objects which on the surface appear to be damaged or fractured and instead strive for an idea of perfection which does not exist. It seeks to inspire people to see imperfections as something to be celebrated, it encourages those who attend to think of what is around us and experience life moment by moment, piece by piece revealing the rich and fragmented nature of the world around us.

These ideas are carried through into the work of Karol Michalec who combines functionless, disused objects to create intricate yet striking sculptures. From a distance these object provide stunning silhouettes, however beyond this compelling façade, the imposing objects reveal a mechanical looking composition, looking as though at any minute they could take on a life of their own. Michalec also applies similar aspirations to produce daunting 2D works, questioning the idea of functionality and the reuse of mundane materials, his thought provoking approach leaves the audience connecting with something deeper than the fragile subjects that stand before them.

In the run up to the exhibition 100 segments of broken plates will be given away to the unsuspecting public, covering the streets of Brighton with a blanket of small scale works, like stars strewn across the sky. Each piece will be labelled with instructions of what to do upon discovery.
